Is SideFX planning to do a new rigging with Houdini series covering Kinefx? I assume the 9 hour rigging with Houdini 16.5 series is now basically obsolete as no one will want to use object level rigging. I would love to see a comprehensive beginners rigging tutorial covering kineFX. I haven't found much in my searches so far. Anyone?

I want to key-frame the enable constraints check box on an object. This would allow me to have the object follow a path and then stop following it and do something else. Unfortunately I have not been able to make this work. Keyframeing the check box from on to off dose not turn off constraints. I thought it might be a bug but I've seen this behavior across multiple versions. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a trick to make it work?

unfortunately if you extrude part of a geometry you have to group the reversed geo before using a revers sop. Wouldn't it make sense for the poly extrude sop to have an option to revers normals on extruded geometry?

Angle, thank you for your response. Since posting this I got my client to wake up. I had to make a firewall rule for the correct port(5000).
However now all jobs sent to the client machine fail with an error that says it cant find the shared folder.
Houdini support sent me an email explaining:
The problem is that Windows services can not use mapped drives. This is a limitation which affects anything the HQueue Client executes. Could you try using full UNC paths instead of the mapped drive paths?
I changed the output picture field in the mantra rop and saved the file with the UNC path and it rendered successfully.

I got the second client to show up in the hqueue interface by changing the firewall settings the second client is there but it is off line. Status: not available i don't now what to try to wake it up.

I have hqueue server and client working on one computer. i can submit jobs and they run and don't fail. I installed hqueue client on a second computer. using the ipadress of the first computer as the server name and the same port 5000. I thought this would work however the second client from the second machine doesn't show up in hqueue. I can ping the first computer from the second computer. using the ip address. Is there another test that will show if my network is setup correctly? what am i missing here?

The ortho grid is turned off in the view port. I'm on linux. If i render an image with the opengl rop by cooking the ropfetch in a topnet the ortho grid is rendered in the image. If I render the directly from the opengl node the grid is not rendered in the image. Is this a bug? Why is the ropfetch top turning on the ortho grid for the render?

Another way to change the background color gradient is in the example files-> Python panel examples-> Viewport color editor. If you load the example it opens a nice little gui for changing colors.

Enivobthis does not work for me in the the group field of a delete sop. its says
Try something like this…v@Cd.r < 0.5
This should delete any color with a red channel less then 0.5. Color ranges are typically 0-1 so think of them as a percentage to keep or remove. Blast or Delete do the same thing.
Warning
'v@Cd.r>0.5' is not a valid group.

Same here the get houdini installer link downloads houdini 16.0.633 which is not helpful. Does sidefx produce the engine plugin? can I download it from the sidefx website somewhere?

jsmack, thanks for the reply. this is so weird. I removed the .env file that came with the toolset, in case of conflict. still doesn't work. also i'm just downloading the zip from github and i've renamed the folder that is in my documents. Now when you refer to my “home folder” do you mean the houdini16.0 folder that is in my documents folder which is the one that contains the houidini.env? because in textport if i echo $HOME i get my documents folder.
Also why does the screen grab you provided have a hip and toolbar folder? the download from github does not contain these folders.

I've recently switched to Linux. I would like to export a video file from mplay the way you can with windows. i read in the mplay viewer help card.
as with many subjects in the Houdini docs, this is not a great starting point for a beginner. I know how to to create a video file from a image sequence from the command line with ffmpeg. I don't know to set it up so it works with mplay.
the cryptic line
Do i need to make changes to these files? Do i make a command line call to export a video file from mplay? Did the author of the help card have narcolepsy and pass out before finishing his work?

Linux movie export is implemented via external applications. In particular, if ffmpeg or mencoder are installed on the system and are found in the PATH environment variable, appropriate menu entries will be found in the File ▸ Export submenu.
These external applications are registered via the $HFS/houdini/MVexport file.

And there is a MVexport markup file there /opt/hfs16.0.736/houdini/MVexport. I also see a directory /opt/hfs16.0.736/houdini/scripts/mvexport containing an ffmpet.py file.

Turns out the error was from something else(and extra . Now it's failing silently when I load Houdini. The GameDevelopmentToolset shelf isn't available and none of its hda's are installed. I think everything is correct. the files are in my Documents folder(see attachment). I don't know if there could be a conflict with something in houdini.env. here is my .env
Not sure what is wrong but its still not installed.
